8 Celebrity Engagement Rings With Colored Gemstones
For centuries, celebrities have used colored gemstone engagement rings to celebrate their love. The unconventional celebs that is. Bored by the lack of expression and meaning of white diamonds, they opted for fine colored gems instead to capture their better half's unique personality.
1. Napoleon Bonaparte and Empress Josephine's Engagement Ring
Napoleon's symbol of love for the Empress Josephine sold at a French auction house in 2013 for $949,000... 47 times its expected value! The ring is almost unique as the relationship itself. With Napoleon being engaged when they met and Josephine having an affair while her husband died in the Reign of Terror, they weren't necessarily destined to have an epic love story. Although their marriage wasn't perfect and ended in divorce, they both claimed to stay devoted to each other. This engagement ring was a stretch for a military man that had not yet climbed the ranks, featuring two pear-shaped stones, a diamond and a classic royal blue sapphire, each just under a carat in what’s called a toi-et-moi ring setting.
2.Victoria Beckham's Engagement Rings
Yes, rings plural!
Over the course of their marriage, husband David Beckham has gifted Victoria with not one, but 14 different engagement rings. Three of these have featured stunning colored stones. First, the cushion emerald set among a spiral of diamonds in 2007, then the oval ruby mounted on a halo of diamonds in 2009, and finally the giant oval-cut sapphire on a thin pavé band in 2010.
3. Elizabeth Hurley's Sapphire Ring
This gorgeous engagement ring was gifted to Liz Hurley by the Australian cricket player Shane Warne. (They actually never got married but colorful engagements like this one deserve a place in this list, I'd say). The sparkling blue sapphire centre stone is approximately 9 carats with two trilliant diamonds sitting on either side.
4. Jessica Simpson's Ruby Engagement Ring
Born July 10th, Jessica Simpson's birthstone is the ruby which is the stone that takes center-stage in her engagement ring. Surrounded by diamonds, the five carat gemstone steals the show with its deep colour and glamorous shine. Birthstones are a great place to start when shopping for a colour gemstone engagement ring. But you always want to consider skin tone and personal style of the wearer as well before selecting the final gem and creating a beautiful piece suitable for everyday wear.
5. Kate Middleton's Sapphire Engagement Ring
The blue sapphire is no stranger to royal families. Probably the most famous engagement ring out there, Kate Middleton's stunning sapphire engagement ring has to be mentioned on this list. Originally purchased by Prince Charles in 1981 and worn by Princess Diana, this ring features 14 solitaire diamonds surrounding a 12 carat Ceylon sapphire. Clearly, this ring has significant meaning to the family as Prince William has said that giving this ring to his now wife was his way of making sure his mother didn't miss their wedding day. (Kate Middleton's engagement announcement dress was styled around the deep blue center stone of this ring).
6. Halle Berry's Emerald Engagement Ring
Halle Berry has one of the most stand-out celebrity engagement rings known today. The square cut, 4 carat-emerald contains Phoenician codes rumored to represent the couple's relationship (who are no longer together...), making it truly a one-of-a-kind, priceless symbol of love. The perfect centre stone sits between two smaller diamonds and the hand-forged gold band came from French jeweler Robert Mazio with an estimated value of $200,000.
7. Penelope Cruz's Daisy Engagement Ring
Valued around $30,000, Penelope Cruz's 3-carat sapphire ring is one of the more modest rings on our list but that doesn’t make it less beautiful. With a brilliant blue, oval-cut sapphire in the centre surrounded by a floral-shaped halo, this ring is designed to look like a beautiful, sparkling daisy.
8. Jackie Kennedy's Emerald Engagement Ring
Designed by Van Cleef & Arpels, Jackie Kennedy's engagement ring design has been talked about for decades and features a 2.84-carat emerald and a 2.88-diamond in an open halo setting. Originally, the ring was designed with baguette diamonds covering the band. Eventually, Jackie decided to double the size of the band with 12 marquise diamonds to add her own personal touch.
Although many of these celebrity engagement rings feature some of the more better-known gemstones, know that it's not only sapphires, rubies and emeralds out there.
There are several other colored gemstones you might never have heard of, such as the endless blue-violet tanzanites or the high-end spinels that come in a variety of stunning colors, like pinks, reds, lavender blues and pastel shades - all capable to steal the show in your own custom-made engagement ring.
