NYFW 2017 Fall/Winter’s Most Fabulous Accessories

"....playful pops of feel-good color abounded in the form of radical dye jobs and high-voltage statement makeup, as did graphic accents that were just as traffic stopping as the miscellany of bright and inspired ensembles on the street."

Street Style New York Fashion Week

“Fashion is what you’re offered four times a year by designers.
And style is what you choose.” — Lauren Hutton

New York Fashion Week has just ended and this year saw the continuation of a fundamental shift in fashion. As new rules from Paris have been hitting the headlines that requires models to be a minimum BMI, in New York we saw a variety of body types hit the runway. Each day ran at least one plus size show and Eckhaus Latta walked a bare pregnant baby bump. Embracing women in a new way has been applauded and shines a light on how the fashion industry is adapting.

Shows were intimate and diverse and guests embraced a renewed sense of fun in fashion. The internet reveled at Leslie Jones cheering in the front row at Christian Siriano. The Washington Post commented "...Delight. Fabulous. Exhilarating. It was a gust of fresh air into an industry that too often sucks the pleasure out of a something." Siriano has always been known for his fashion forward approach and this time walked a glorious rainbow of color with oversized ruffles and an explosion of floral appliqués.

"Delight. Fabulous. Exhilarating."

CSirano New York Fashion Week

The fun continued at an 'ode to New York' parade by Alexander Wang. While other designers had vacated New York this year, he stood firm and demonstrated his love for this great city. People filled the sidewalks of Brooklyn as his models strutted the streets as their runway. As always, the pop culture icon Kendall Jenner took the prize for most 'instagrammable' look with her Wangover party head piece.

From fun to the fearless, Fenty x Puma entertained in their larger than life X-Games inspired catwalk. Motorcross stunts tumbled over glittering mounds of pink sand while colorful ready-to-wear athleisure in scuba, fanny packs and perspex heels took this trend to a new level. Rihanna, true to her daring style, closed the show in neon streetwear and accessories on the back of a motorbike.

At the other end of the scale, we were treated to indulge in the idea 'where passion obsession meets fashion'. Ralph Lauren has long been known for his love of automobiles, so what's better than sending your models down a catwalk of 15 of the worlds rarest cars, including a 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic. His luxury transportation inspiration was expressed in iridescent silver, red glossy patent leather and even racing stripes.

Where Passion Obsession Meets Fashion

This year's New York fashion week was criticized as being commercial, but what actually took place was a return to the celebration of fashion and its personal inspirations. The diversity of themes represented designers' true loves, from the female spirit to cars. Removing the restraints that can be austere, we were welcomed into a world of playful fashion and plenty of color... and I loved it! A great backdrop for colored gemstone jewelry if you ask me ????????????

Trend Spotter - Block Color & Confusion of Fabrics

When it comes to the use of blocking color - the idea whereby you take colors that are opposites on the color wheel, such as yellow, blue and red, and pair them to make interesting color combinations, a concept said to be derived from the artwork of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian - it seems there are no rules this year accept to keep it bright and bold. Yellow, fuchsia pink, forest green & tangerine all made an appearance. Opt for shape and structure over pattern, mix and match your brights, layer with bold and colorful statement accessories and bring the fun back into your closet.

Collections this year also saw a confusion of fabric choices, mixing rubber in cutouts, tule over glossy patent leather and even denim and gemstones. Don't be afraid to get creative with the texture of your style choices. Look out for contrasting textiles this spring and add extra sparkle to a dull fabric with gemstone embellishments.
